Mid-century shawl-collar dinner jacket by Griffon Clothes, the Baltimore clothier, retailed by Jack Krawcheck's of Charleston, South Carolina - the label reads "Griffon Clothes - Tailored for Jack Krawcheck, Charleston." Jack Krawcheck opened his King Street shop in 1922 and it stood as one of the legends of King Street for more than seventy years until it closed in 1995; the store's business records are archived at the College of Charleston, and Wall Street executive Sallie Krawcheck has said the family store is where she learned her first lessons about money. This Griffon label style dates to roughly 1949-1962, which matches the one-button shawl styling. Black cloth (reads as wool - no fiber tag, as typical of the era) with a satin shawl collar that has mellowed to a smoky bronze-black with age - the soft patina mid-century black silk satin takes on, and it reads as a subtle contrast collar. One-button front, flap hip pockets, chest welt, figured lining with interior pocket, center vent, PRESS WITH COOL IRON care tag. Vintage jacket - no size tag, fits like a 38R/39R (see measurements).
